Women Awareness Center Nepal
Earthquake Relief Update
Women Awareness Center Nepal (WACN), is involved in the earthquake relief efforts in Kavre district, one of the hardest hit districts by this disaster. The total number of households that were destroyed (collapsed houses) in the entire Kavre region is 45,816. Some 22,000 houses have sustained serious damage.
Improving access to adequate shelter for earthquake survivors is a pressing need. People are living in their yards by setting up temporary tents with whatever material is found. The aid supplies have been distributed to some extent supplying the families without homes with tents. The urgent need at hand we see is for more tents as a short term solution. Sporadic rain is also making life more difficult. We are also collecting whatever necessities we can gather from religious communities and charities. Another major problem is of food supplies. The village has limited amount of inventory. Domesticated animals which are the main source of income were buried during the collapse. This has created a situation where people do not have income to buy food. The total number of households that were destroyed (collapsed houses) in the entire Kavre region is 45,816. Some 22,000 houses have sustained serious damage and it is too risky to stay inside. Until now 340 people have died in Kavre.
We have also provided direct financial support to pregnant women and mothers of new born babies. There is an urgent need to do more for these women. We anticipate health problems, food shortage, housing issues as we face this situation however right now our focus is on daily necessities like food, water and temporary shelters. Anyone interested in providing assistance to the people in crisis. Please contact us.
