From the tender age of 12, Gamala Tamang’s life was intertwined with the harsh reality of brick factory labor. Growing up, she accompanied her parents to the brick factory, and later, together with her husband, they embarked on this arduous path. Despite the long hours and grueling conditions, they found it immensely challenging to sustain their livelihood solely through their earnings from the brick factory. Gamala’s resilience was unwavering, as she even continued working during her pregnancy and gave birth to her son within the factory’s confines.
Turning Points:
In 2013, a ray of hope illuminated Gamala’s life as she became a part of the Farmers Field School Program, an initiative organized by NCK in partnership with World Education International. This program provided her with invaluable training in diverse farming techniques, fundamentally altering her perspective and capabilities. Armed with newfound knowledge, Gamala’s life began to shift. Her farming and marketing skills flourished, leading her to establish a small roadside vegetable stall. This venture not only brought her financial stability but also allowed her to uplift her community.
Empowerment Through Education:
NCK’s support extended beyond education to entrepreneurship. The provision of plastic ponds for rainwater collection transformed Gamala’s irrigation practices, making her more self-sufficient in farming. Additionally, she harnessed the potential of organic natural fertilizers and collaborated with fellow participants to form a women’s group of 23 members. This group not only provided financial opportunities through loans but also supported educational pursuits, as Gamala’s son could now focus on his studies rather than labor.
