WACN’s learning journey to Odisha, India

From February 3 to February 12, 2025, a group of 25 participants representing different communities of Nari Chetana Kendra Nepal (WACN), recently embarked on an unforgettable learning journey to Odisha, India. The visit was an incredible opportunity to learn about agricultural sustainability, women’s empowerment, and cultural heritage, providing deep insights into grassroots efforts that are driving meaningful social change.

One of the most inspiring moments was meeting the incredible team at the Association for Social Health Advancement(ASHA),a women-led organization founded by Punam Totapa, a dedicated social worker who invested her personal wealth into uplifting women and marginalized communities. The foundation plays a vital role in advocating for human rights, creating employment opportunities, and empowering women economically. It was truly inspiring to see how women are being equipped with the skills and confidence to lead change in their communities. The participants also had the chance to visit the Odisha Foundation, a well-known organization known for its innovative work in sustainable agriculture. The team witnessed innovative farming techniques and explored ways to apply them in Nepal. It emphasized the importance of local adaptation and sustainable practices in ensuring food security and environmental conservation.

Beyond the learning experience, we immersed ourselves in Odisha’s rich culture and traditions, visiting world heritage sites such as Bhubaneswar Temple and Jagannath Temple and many others. These visits provided a deeper understanding of Odisha’s rich cultural and spiritual traditions, demonstrating how deeply ingrained beliefs shape communities and ways of life.

This journey was a powerful reminder of the power of community-driven solutions, as well as the importance of women’s leadership in sustainable development. We return home inspired, motivated, and committed to applying these valuable lessons in our own communities.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this trip possible!
