Multiple factors are responsible for backwardness of agriculture in Nepal including traditional farming, poor irrigation facility, lack of modern agriculture equipment and knowledge, poor economic condition, lack of transport and market access, land fragmentation and problems arising due to climate change. Other challenges are loss of agricultural land, unscientific use of fertilizers and pesticides, and environmental degradation. Therefore, Nepalese agriculture cannot meet the growing food requirement and had to rely on imports. A rapidly growing population, limited land resources, low productivity, climate change and loss of biodiversity are key factors causing food insecurity in Nepal.

Key interventions:

  • Capacity building of farmers and agricultural workers for improved adoption of quality agricultural practices and technologies;
  • Increase crop productivity and promote crop diversification, for improving food and nutritional security, through quality extension services to farmers;
  • Capacity building for soil management, integrated pest management (IPM) practice and organic agriculture practices and farmyard manuring;
  • Preserve and protect biodiversity and territories
  • Develop local resource persons on agriculture who could assist locals with the sustainable management of local natural resources through soil conservation reducing the loss of biodiversity.
  • Establish seed banks for local varieties of cereals;
  • Strengthened capacity building in integrated crop and water management practices and on‐farm water management efficiency;
  • Strengthened capacity building and advice in the monitoring of food and nutrition security;
  • Provide fodder seeds to farmers for livestock management;
  • Research on improving farm productivity, adaptation needs, market linkages, and resilient agriculture.
  • Organized agri-promotion learning exchange and exposure visit programs
  • Train farmers to make most of new technology
